The construction of the modern Hässelby estate took place mainly between 1953 and 1955. The driving force was the city planning director Sven Markelius. The detailed plans had been drawn up by architects Carl-Fredrik Ahlberg, Göran Sidenbladh and Hans Uddenberg and others in 1952.

They built alternating high point houses and low panel houses around protected courtyards. One building that attracted a lot of attention was Hässelby Familjehotell at Ormängsgatan 43-71. It was a collective building comprising 17 buildings, designed by architect Carl-Axel Acking and built by master builder Olle Engkvist from 1954 to 1956.

History

The design work began in 1953 and construction began in the New Year 1953, the first tenants were able to move in in December of the same year. By 1955 all the apartments were rented and in 1956 the restaurant and daycare center were put into use.

The building complex itself consists of four 8-9-storey high-rise buildings, interconnected by a large number of 3-storey buildings. The buildings are connected by a 750-metre-long corridor system, which allows access to the dining room and other facilities in the complex in all weather conditions. The facade architecture is dominated by red brick and the rounded roof end of the low-rise buildings.

There were a total of 340 apartments, four courtyards, two dining rooms, a gym, a youth center, a supermarket, a garage for 80 cars and a chapel. The apartment types vary from single rooms on the ground floor of about 25 m² and a small garden to mezzanine five- and six-room apartments ten stairs up in a high-rise building with a roof terrace and views over Lake Mälaren and into Stockholm. The large dining room, located centrally in one of the courtyards, was the heart of the complex. The professional collective activities were closed down in 1976, but are still partly run on a non-profit basis by the residents.

In addition to a restaurant that served dinner, there were services such as a daycare center, laundry, cleaning services, reception, convenience store, banquet hall, assembly hall, chapel, hairdresser, gym, sauna, library, hobby room and more.

The center, Hässelby Square, is, according to the urban planning model of the time, located around the subway entrance with shops around it.
