History
The entire area once belonged to Sätra gård, and the name has been documented since 1628. A croft named Bredäng, built in the 1780s, was previously located at what is now Frimurarvägen 31, but it burned down in 1961. Farming was carried out here until 1949.
Jakobsbergs gård was originally also a croft under Sätra gård, and the croft has been located here since the 17th century. It was originally called Ulvgrytet, but in more recent times it was renamed Ålgryte. In the 1750s, it was leased by Jacob Graver, who had the croft rebuilt into a small manor house.
Another older building is Villa Lyran, a summer residence from 1867 that served as a meeting place for many writers, musicians, and artists of the 19th century. The developer was Carl Limnell, head of department at Järnvägsstyrelsen. Since the 1960s, Konditori Lyran has been located here.
Construction of the modern Bredäng began on September 1, 1962. The first buildings were erected at Ålgrytebacken, with residents moving in during the summer of 1963. Construction then continued until 1975. The city plan was designed by Josef Stäck at the municipality’s city planning office. The architects behind Bredäng centrum are Jon Höijer and Sture Ljungqvist.
Leisure and recreation
Bredäng has a swimming pool and a library. A campsite, Bredängs camping, is located in the western part of Bredäng.
Along the shore of Lake Mälaren there is a forest area and several swimming areas, including Mälarhöjdsbadet.
