History
Settlement remains show that the area was inhabited as early as 5,000 years ago. However, Malmköping has been most strongly shaped by the military regiment that had its training grounds here. The town originally grew around the armed forces, which were active in the area between 1774 and 1921.
In 1771, Gustaf Adolf von Siegroth became commander of Södermanlands regemente, and in the same year he selected Malma hed as the permanent training ground (1774–1921).
The settlement was originally a church village in (Lilla) Malma socken under the name Malma. On February 3, 1785, following an application by Gustaf Adolf von Siegroth, the settlement was granted market town privileges (friköping) and was then renamed Malmköping. As part of the municipal reform of 1862, the settlement was reorganized into a market town municipality, Malmköpings köping. In 1971, the market town municipality was incorporated into Flens kommun.
Leisure and recreation
Malmköping is home to Sweden’s Local Transport Museum, which features, among other things, tramcars from many of Sweden’s former tramway cities.
The museum is run on a voluntary basis by members of Svenska Spårvägssällskapet. Other museums include Museet Malmahed and a so-called naturum (nature visitor centre).
Malma-Marken is a market held at Malma hed, organized by Malmköpings IF on the last weekend of July since 1976, and it typically attracts around 60,000–80,000 visitors.
Another market is Gammaldags Malmköpings Marknad. It is held every year on the last Saturday of May and usually attracts around 20,000 visitors. The market has different themes each year, and many visitors attend dressed in traditional old-fashioned clothing, workwear, folk costumes, or multicultural attire, while the vendors, craftsmen, and other sellers are often dressed in period-style clothing as well.
The Midsummer celebration takes place at the local heritage farm (hembygdsgården) in Malmköping. The maypole decorations include, for example, hollowed-out painted eggs or eggs wrapped in colorful foil. Bright fabric strips and cut-up tin and beer cans are also used, along with, of course, flowers and greenery.
