Kungens Kurva is one of Scandinavia's largest shopping centers and one of Greater Stockholm's most expanding business areas with several initiatives and the most visited retail location in the Stockholm area.

Location

Huddinge municipality, Stockholm County.

Transport connections

Good public transport connections to and from the area. Kungens Kurva is located along the E4/E20, approximately 15 km southwest of central Stockholm, and can be reached by SL buses from, among other places, Skärholmen and Fruängen, both of which are served by the metro.

Services

All conceivable services are available in the immediate area, including the Scandic and Prince Carl hotels. This is also where Sweden’s first and largest IKEA is located, along with chains such as McDonald’s, ICA Kvantum, Heron City, Elgiganten, Siba, City Gross, Rusta, Jula, Media Markt, and Toys “R” Us, among others. The nearest shopping center is Skärholmen, just a few minutes away by car.

History

The first company to establish itself here was IKEA Kungens Kurva, which opened its furniture store on June 18, 1965. At the time, it was the first IKEA furniture store built in Sweden after the original store in Älmhult. Following a major renovation and expansion between 2000 and 2002, it is now the largest IKEA facility in the world in terms of floor area.

Since then, the retail area has been expanded in several stages. The largest expansion was completed in 2001, when the Heron City complex was added to the south, and City Gross—with Apoteket, Systembolaget, Intersport, and others—was established in the eastern part of the area.

‍The story behind the name

The origin of the name comes from an incident involving a 1939 Cadillac Series 75 in which King Gustaf V was traveling. On September 28, 1946, the car ran into a ditch at this location. The King, his chief stable master, and two other hunters were on their way home from a hunt at Tullgarn Palace when the driver lost control of the vehicle on Gamla Södertäljevägen, skidded off the road, and ended up in a water-filled ditch.

The press was quickly on site to photograph the incident. Media reports claimed that the King had “urged” his chauffeur to drive faster. The car bore the registration number A 4 and is now on display at the car museum at Sparreholms slott. Two newly opened ESSO petrol stations on either side of the highway— which for many years were Scandinavia’s largest in terms of turnover—were named Kungens kurva by their owner, Tore Jakobson. The name was later adopted officially for the entire area. Today, the road has been straightened and has also become the E4/E20 motorway (Södertäljevägen).
