History
Yxtaholm appears in written sources as a settlement as early as 1329, when the then owner, Lars Knutson, recorded it in his will, writing “Curiam meam Yxta parochia medhellösu” — indicating that he had established his Yxta. At that time, the settlement, then known as Yxta, was located on the mainland by Lake Yxtasjön and consisted of wooden buildings.
In 1550, Nyköping Castle County took over ownership of Yxta. At the time, Thure Jönsson Tre Rosor served as county governor. Toward the end of the 16th century, the estate passed into private ownership, and in 1581 Sven Jönsson Lilje was granted, by Duke Karl—then residing at Nyköpingshus—the right to establish a manor estate at Yxta.
During the 17th century, Yxta flourished, and a new wooden manor house was built on the peninsula extending into Lake Yxtasjön. At this point, the settlement changed its name from Yxta to Yxtaholm. Over the centuries, Yxtaholm became home to the Ulfsporre, Liliesparre, Hägerstierna, and Sparre families.
In 1728, Yxtaholm was inherited and came to be used by the children of the Sparre family. One of them, Beata Gustava, married Gustaf Nils Clodt, who had relocated from Livonia. It was under the ownership of the Clodt family that Yxtaholm assumed its present form.
Between 1750 and 1753, the castle was extensively renovated at a cost of 78,890 daler copper coins. The earlier wooden buildings were replaced by a main building and wings constructed in whitewashed brick. In addition, a stately three-storey stable, a gazebo, a laundry building, and an orangery were added. All buildings were constructed using bricks fired in the brick kiln that still exists today and were subsequently whitewashed.
After Clodt’s death, the estate was mortgaged to Anders Tottie, who in 1797 received royal permission to take over the manor as his own property, despite not being of noble status.
During the 19th century, ownership of Yxtaholms Slott changed frequently. Among the families associated with the estate were de Geer, von Platen, Hamilton, Brehmer, and Rettig. In the first half of the 20th century, ownership included the Ugglas, Bielke, von Rosen, Hoffman, and Braunerhielm families.
The previous owners, the Swedish Employers’ Association, acquired Yxtaholm in 1948 and restored the rather dilapidated castle in good style. During this period, Yxtaholm was used as a boarding school and training centre. Hotel rooms with private bathrooms, conference facilities, and dining halls were created and renovated.
Today, Yxtaholms Slott is owned by Wonna I de Jong Schaefer and her family.
